Family snowshoeing

Enjoy the snowy mountains with your family with this snowshoeing tour during which the whole family will learn to watch and understand nature through fun activities. Mountain village, Sixt fer à cheval is classified « Grand Site de France ». At the end of the Giffre valley, at 780 m elevation high, it is a prestigious site for its great landscapes and rich culture.

Itinerary

 

D 1/ Auberge de Salvagny – Big horn sheep hike

Meeting at Auberge de Salvagny at 11 am where we sttle down for 5 nights. You leave with your guide for a pic-nic and a hike during which we may see big horn sheeps in a remote little valley. Diner and night in the hostel.
3 h hike. A and D: 200 m.

D 2/ "Tracks" hike & Panorama at Praz de Lys - Astronomy

Snowshoe hike on the wild Loex plateau, through a gorgeous pine tree forest, with breathtaking views on Mont Blanc, Chablais, and Aravis. We will look for animal tracks (chamois, hare, fox...) and learn how to recognize them.
5 h hike. A and D: 600 m.
Astronomy evening (around 2 h) :
After diner,  you will learn about the solar system, the planets, and the stars. If the weather is good, you will watch the wky and use your new knowledge.

D 3/ Hike, Museum & Snack at Clos Parchet – "Fondue" party in a mountain "chalet"

Hike above Samoens to an old traditionnal farm. You will discover the traditionnal tools and imagine the way of life of our ancesters. Pic-nic at the farm with local products. Back to the hostel around 2 pm.
3 h hike. A and D: 200 m.
"Fondue" party (retour vers 22h) :
We leave around 6 pm for a short hike in the forest to reach a "chalet" for a "fondue" party: a local dish where you dip bread into melted cheese, mmm! After diner, we hike back to the hostel with torches.

D 4/ Visit of Morillon and Samoens – Ice skating and sleding.

Free morning. After teh pic-nic at the hostel with your guide, you leave for a visit of the villages of Samoens and Morillon. You leave the snowshoes to enjoy iceskating, sleding, and building snowmen!

D 5/ Réserve Naturelle de Sixt Fer

Hike in the famous "cirque du Fer à cheval" ("horseshoe amphitheater") with the Natural Reserve guide to watch the animals and learn about their winter habits and survival stategies. We visit the Reserve's visitor center.
3 h hike. A and D: 300 m

D 6/ Cheese factory in Mieussy: visit and tasting

This morning we will discover the mountain cheeses with the visit of the factory and cheese tasting. We will learn how the cheese is made and how much it contributes to the valley's economy and prestige. End of the tour at the hostel around 2 pm.
