Gran Paradiso is one of the easiest 4000 meters high peaks in the western Alps. The beautiful landscapes, the wildlife of the national park and the quality of the downhills totally compensate the crowd, very well managed in the Victor-Emmanuel II hut by the way. Smaller, the Tresenta (3609 m), in the shadow of its huge neighbor, is pretty attractive anyway: a little steeper, it offers great ski and a great panorama.
| Highlights • The ski ascent of Gran Paradiso, an easy 4000 peters high peak. • A ski tour in the national park, a haven for wildlife. • The nights in Victor-Emmanuel hut. • The ski ascent of two other summits. |
Itinerary
D 1/ Aoste - Pont - Victor-Emmanuel II hut (2732 m)
Meeting early afternoon at the train station in Aosta (Italy). Transfer to Valsavarenche to the end of the road. It is not always open up to the village of Pont (1960 m), classic starting point for Grand Paradiso. Ski up to the hut through the forest, with a good chance of meeting ibex. Above the forest, the panorama opens up on the Gran Paradiso and the Ciarforon. The guide will present the program, equipment and techniques for everyone's security. Diner and night in the hut.
A: 800 to 900 m, depending on the snow conditions.
D 2/ Victor-Emmanuel II hut - Gran Paradiso (4061 m)
Ski ascent of Gran Paradiso along the namesake glacier. The way up is easy, with a few steeper parts where we may need the crampons, if the snow is hard. We circle a couple of seracs and get closer to the impressive south face of Becca di Moncorve. We leave oru skis at the pass before the short final ascent in the rocks. The last meters are very impressive, above the very steep east face, but they are mandatory to reach the statue of Mary that marks the top. Descent by the same itinerary. The slopes are wide and the north-west orientation should offer a good snow. Diner and night in the hut.
A and D: 1330 m.
D 3/ Victor-Emmanuel II hut - Grand Etret (3302 m)
A short climb traversing the Moncorvé glacier, before a little downhill under the Monciair and Breuil spike to reach the Grand Etret glacier. From there, large easy slopes lead to the top. On the way down, great downhill on the Grand Etret glacier and in the Seyvaz glen, to the hut. Diner and night in the hut.
A: 750 m. D: 750 m.
D4/ Victor-Emmanuel II hut - Tresenta (3609 m) - Aoste
Beautiful mountain, the Tresenta looks like it was made for skiers! the itinerary is direct from the hut to the top. Only the final slope demands to be a little carefull but promises a great downhill! From the top, the view is impressive on the rocky faces of Gran Paradiso and the glacial slopes of Ciarforon. On our way down, we stop at the hut to take our bags and maybe have a bear! Back to Aosta in the afernoon.
A: 880 m. D: 1700 to 1800 m.
