I songly believe, and not just me but everyone in our group of 15, that the agent we worked with for the Dolomites trip should not be in a customer facing position. This is the 2nd time we have booked a trip through MBE, and we loved working with Thomas in our last TMB trip, but he was unfortunately not contactable this time around. Our needs were considered not important and we did not feel heard.

1. We were put in 2 different hotels and so many felt left out. We did book over 6 months in advance and soft reservations could easily have ensured we were together.
2. No cabs, dinner or transportation was included and we were told that cabs would be hard to find as it was early August. We found that to be false.
3. The cost was high and the only thing they really booked were the hotels. There was nothing else booked expect for transportation on 1 day out of 7.
4. The hotels were sub par as compared to the ones we got during TMB.

Unfortunately, I will not be recommending this agency

Day by day

Day 1

Welcome in Cortina d'Ampezzo - Hike to Lake Ghedina

Distance : 5 km (3 mi) - Ascent : 500 m (1,640 ft). Descent : 500 m (1,640 ft). 3 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel.

Start early afternoon allowing you the time to get there. Check in your hotel and settle in for five nights.
The first hike, a warm up, takes you on the trails that start in town. The climb through the forest to Drusé Pass leads you past Tofane's towering rock walls and all the way to Lake Ghedina for a peaceful afternoon before heading back to your hotel.

Day 2

Falzarego pass - Lagazuoï - Scotoni - Valparola

Distance : 15 km (9.5 mi) - Ascent : 700 m (2,296 ft). Descent : 1100 m (3,609 ft). 4,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Transfer by bus to Falzarego Pass, one of the most popular trailheads in the Dolomites. At the foot of the famed Lagazuoi, the day's first climb leads to Lagazuoi Pass (2,573m / 8,441ft). Continue heading uphill to the summit, where you will stumble upon the ruins of several old military installations. As you start your descent, hike through a wide rocky valley and beneath steep cliffs equipped for via ferrata climbing. The descent then continues to Lake Lagazuoi and the the Scotini Hut, a popular final destination for Italian families on a day hike. From there, the trail descends leisurely to Valparola, where you will catch the bus back to your hotel.

Day 3

Hiking around Tre Cime and Mt Paterno

Distance : 10 km (6.5 mi) - Ascent : 600 m (1,968 ft). Descent : 600 m (1,968 ft). 4,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Transfer by private shuttle to the Auronzo Hut (2,320m / 7,611ft). The day starts on easy terrain to the foot of Tre Cime's south face. Walk along the base until you reach Laveredo Lake. From there, circumnavigate Mt. Paterno via Pian del Cengia (Cengia flats) and Cengia Pass. The trail winds back around to the Locatelli Hut, where great views of Tre Cime's north face will simply leave you in awe. For the rest of the afternoon, hike along the foot of several legendary north faces where you will likely see climbers scaling these towering rock walls. Hike over Medo Pass back to the Auronzo Hut. A private shuttle will take you back to Cortina.

Day 4

Hiking around Tofana di Rozes

Distance : 12 km (7,4 mi) - Ascent : 950 m (3,116 ft). Descent : 950 m (3,116 ft). 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Take early morning transfer by private shuttle to the Dibona Hut, the start of today's hike around Tofana di Rozes, Cortina's iconic mountain. From the hut, the trail climbs steadily towards Tofana's towering south face. From there, it contours along the base of the cliffs, offering one breathtaking view after another. Once over Bos Pass, Val Travenanzes takes you around the western side of Tofana. On the descent, a new trail winds and zigzags down the side of the mount to a small notch leading to a narrow gully (Majarie) boxed in between two Tofana peaks. Follow this trail up to the Giusani Hut (2,580m / 8,464ft), the usual base camp for most ascents of the main peak. From here, enjoy the descent on a comfortable trail through scree all the way to the Dibona Hut. Transfer by private shuttle for your last night in Cortina.

Day 5

Hike around Averau and the Cinque Torri

Distance : 11 km (6,8 mi) - Ascent : 550 m (1805 ft). Descent : 800 m (2625 ft). 4,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

This is the last time you will take the early morning shuttle along the now familiar road to Falzarego Pass where you started your trip. Today, the trailhead starts on the opposite side of the valley facing the Lagazuoi and Tofane, within a smaller group of peaks that has several surprises in store for you. The trail quickly leads out of the alpine meadows and small ski area towards the higher lunar terrain far above tree line. Once at Averau's base, continue hiking around its rocky summit spire to Nuvolau Pass. While climbing to the top of Nuvolau Peak is optional, we highly recommend it, since the small hut located at the summit is typical of the Dolomites and offers amazing views in every direction. When back at Nuvolau Pass, hike to the legendary Cinque Torri, well known for their great climbing and where several Dolomite climbers got their start. The area also boasts a rich history that we recommend taking the time to learn about before the trip officially comes to an end at Dames Lake. Last transfer back to Cortina ans last night in town.

Day 6

Bye-bye Dolomites!

Enjoy your last breakfast before checking out. Take the time to explore Cortina d'Ampezzo before heading off.

Currencies

Italy are part of the Euro zone. You may find ATMs easily in the main cities and towns.
Better to have cash in the most remote areas to purchase extras (ex.: for drinks). Huts do not always accept credit cards.

Access

Access

This trip starts and ends in Pocol, near Cortina d'Ampezzo. The nearest airport for this trip is Venezia-Marco Polo airport. It takes about 2 hours to drive to the center of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

From Venice airport, there are different buses company to get to Cortina d'Ampezzo. The Bus timetables can be checked on the following websites:

  • With the Cortina Express buses, taking approximately 2h20. Departures are twice daily, usually in the afternoon. We strongly recommend checking their website for exact timetables and booking your tickets in advance to secure your seat.
  • With ATVO buses: in the same way as with the Cortina Express company, we recommend booking your tickets in advance and collecting them by the evening before at the latest. Two departures per day (usually in the morning).
Depending on your preferences, we can arrange a private cab transfer between the airport and Pocol.
We can book this for you, just ask our specialists. Please let us know your flight schedule so that we can organize your transfer as early as possible and in the time slot that suits you best.

Transfers

For your comfort and the quality of your stay, we have chosen the most interesting stops in the region, which can be reached either by private transfer (included) or by local bus (at your expense):
  • Day 2: local bus from Cortina to Falzarego Pass (one way) ; local bus from Valparola to Cortina (one way)
  • Day 3: private transfer from Cortina to Auronzo hut (round trip). 
  • Day 4: private transfer from Cortina to Dibona hut (round trip).
  • Day 5: local bus from Cortina - Col Falzarego (round trip).

Lodging

You'll stay in a 3-star hotel in Cortina d'Ampezzo, based on double/twin room and in bed&breakfast.
This town is a true jewel of the Dolomites, one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world. In summer, its verdant valleys, breathtaking scenery and sparkling lakes invite you to explore nature on unforgettable hikes.
But Cortina d'Ampezzo isn't just about the great outdoors; it's also brimming with culture and charm. Take a stroll through its picturesque back streets, discover unique craft shops and indulge in tasty local cuisine that will awaken your taste buds.

NB:
Please note that the first week of July, when the Dolomites host a cycling marathon, and Holy Week including August 15 are very high season periods.

Meals

Our goal is to ensure that you eat well-balanced meals suited for the effort required each day, and to lighten your pack load as much as possible.

Breakfast :
The hotels offer a generous and varied buffet: pastries, fresh bread, homemade jams, fruit and cereals. Savory lovers will also find something to their liking, with a choice of breads, cheeses, ham and eggs.

Dinners :
We have decided not to include dinners to let you choose where you want to eat. There are plenty of restaurants in and around Cortina d'Ampezzo to awaken your taste buds.
NB : Don't be surprised if you notice on the bill the words "pane e coperto" followed by an amount. This is common practice in Italy. The cost can vary from €0.50 to €4, depending on the restaurant.

If you have strict dietary constraints, we invite you to communicate them to us before departure, in your personal space.

Lunches:
You can buy local produce in the valley's supermarkets. It's also possible to have a good lunch in the mountain inns you'll find along the way. You'll have the chance to try potato gnocchi, stuffed pasta, pea soup and much more.

Drinks:
Beverages (excluding water) are not included. Please pay for all drinks consumed on site before your departure, to avoid any additional charges after your stay.

Luggage transfer

No baggage transfer required for this trip as this is a "center-based" program. Carry what you need in a lightweight pack on each day's hike.

Trails

Well-marked itinerary, previously recognized by our guides. You are in charge of your route and must know how to read a map and use a compass. You also have precise directions in the "Mon Roadbook" app and in the paper roadbook that will be given to you before departure (maps, descriptive plan, specific information...). The "Mon Roadbook" app allows you to centralize all the necessary information for your trip:
  • The identification of service providers operating during your stay
  • GPS guidance on a map background
  • Photos of crossings
  • The various points of interest on the hike: natural or heritage.
This application, included for this trip, must be downloaded before your departure and works offline (without network).

For each stage, make sure you check the latest information on trail conditions; the manager at your accommodations should also be able to provide you with up-to-date information if you ask.

Itineraries

Our elevation gains are calculated based on altitude differences provided on maps, not by GPS, which, for technical reasons (GPS altitude inaccuracies + statistical dispersion), often give overestimated elevation gains, sometimes by up to 20%.

What you need to know

Be prepared for the weather:
The weather in mountains can change very quickly. the weather forecast is quite accurate for the next 3 upcoming days, but not that much further. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoon when the weather is hot, they are very located and show up very quickly. Wake up earlier in the morning when the weather forecast announces it, you will have crossed the high pass before it starts. Passes and ridge are not safe is the case of thunder. Take advice from your host the day before.

Considering the Environment:
While trekking you have to be careful not to destroy the environment you are enjoying so much. It is not only for your enjoyment, but people and wildlife also rely on this environment.
 
Here are some simple tips:

  • Pick up any litter along the trail.
  • Burn all your toilet paper and bury your faeces, make sure you go at least 50m away from any water source.
  • Drink tap water instead of mineral water as plastic bottles are an unnecessary waste.
  • Stick to the trails to prevent erosion and damage to fragile alpine flora.
  • Ensure all rubbish is packed and bring them back down to the villages.

Insurance :
All tour participants should obtain their own personal insurance which covers medical and emergency evacuation at a minimum. You will of course also want cover for loss or damage to personal effects, flight or trip cancellation etc. Please ask us for advice.

Final tips!

  • To ensure that you have the best time possible, please respect local traditions, customs, values and the environment.
  • Respect privacy when taking photographs.
  • Your attempts at speaking some French or Italian will open hearts and break the ice!
  • Protect the natural environment, see above.

Formalities

American, Canadian, Australian and British Travellers

Visa Requirements

  • No visa is required for American, Canadian, British or Australian citizens for stays of up to 90 days within the Schengen Area.

Passport Requirements
Travellers must hold a passport that:

  • is valid upon entry, and
  • remains valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen Area.

It is strongly recommended to ensure a minimum of 6 months' validity prior to expiration to avoid potential boarding refusals by airlines.

Asian Travellers - Visa-Exempt Countries

The following nationalities may enter the Schengen Area for tourist stays of up to 90 days without a visa :
Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong (HKSAR passport).

Entry conditions for these travellers are identical to those applicable to American or British nationals:

  • no visa required,
  • passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date.

Asian Travellers - Visa-Required Countries

Travellers holding passports from China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, and other South and Southeast Asian countries must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa prior to travel, including for stays of less than 30 days.

  • Visa applications must be submitted to the relevant French, Swiss or Italian consular authorities in the traveller's country of residence. Processing times may vary.
  • Passports must be in good, undamaged condition (no tears, stains, staples, clips, or other alterations).

Health

Routine Vaccinations:
Travellers should ensure that their routine vaccinations are up to date, according to national guidelines :

  • Tetanus - diphtheria - pertussis (Tdap)
  • Measles - mumps - rubella (MMR)
  • Polio
  • Seasonal influenza
  • COVID-19

These vaccinations are generally recommended for all adults.

Altitude and Physical Effort
Our tour in Italy involves sustained daily effort and includes sections at moderate altitude. Travellers are advised to :

  • ensure they are in adequate physical condition,
  • consult a healthcare professional in case of medical conditions potentially affected by altitude or exertion,
  • bring all personal medication required for the entire duration of the trip.

Some tips for staying healthy:
Tap water is mostly good for drinking all other the Alps. Unless notified as not, you can consider it as drinkable. Even if they are recyclable we request you consider the waste impact of your bottles.
Your hands are perhaps your biggest enemy in terms of your health as they get very dirty during the day. Wash your hands before every meal or snack. People often think they get sick from the food, but it's far more likely they forgot to wash their hands!

If you have any special dietary requirements, please advise us when booking your trek so that we can cater for you. 
Note: sometimes not all dietary requirements are able to be met, but please inform us and we will certainly do our best! 

Dentist and general physician
We recommend a checkup with both before leaving on your trip.

Getting ready

Physical fitness level 2

To take full advantage of your trip, make sure that you stay in good shape by walking or hiking at least twice per week (12km to 15km).

Physical fitness level 3

To take full advantage of your trip, make sure that you stay in good shape by walking or hiking least once per week (around 15km) on a trail with considerable vertical gain (250m/hr) or by participating in a moderately intense athletic activity for 1 to 1.5hrs.

Your first aid kit

It is recommended that you bring a small personal medical kit including your preferred painkillers, throat lozenges, plasters, strapping tape for blisters, etc. If you are taking regular medication you MUST bring those medicines with you PLUS an extra supply in case one pack is lost. If you have any allergies and/or take any medications, you MUST advise us when booking your trek! 

For the medication and pain relievers listed below, we recommend that you check with your doctor beforehand, adding what you need based on personal requirements and the specificity of your trip.

  • An analgesic.
  • An anti-inflammatory (pills or gels).
  • An anti-diarrheal tablets,
  • A disinfectant, band aids (several sizes), mole skin, sterile compresses, medical tape, Steri-Strips, non-stick bandages, and an elastic bandage.
  • An antiseptic.
  • Sunscreen and a burn cream.
  • Eye drops.
  • Other : survival blanket, scissors, 2 or 3 safety pins, a tick remover, a pair of latex gloves, earplugs.
  • Any personal medication.

Gear list

What we supply for your trek:

We provide 1 set for every 4 participants, which includes detailed hiking maps of the region, and a roadbook describing your itinerary and trip (a lot of tips and some alternative routes are included).

You will have access to our 24/24 7/7 support hotline to assists you during your trip.
Each participant will have access on his phone to our "Roadbook" app which includes an itinerary descriptions as well GPS guidance.

What you need to bring:

If you don't have the luggage transfer option, pack light, remember that you will have to carry all your stuff during the whole trip. We recommend that your backpack doesn't exceed 10 to 15% of your weight. Take only the essential:

Head:

  • Warm hat.
  • Cap or sun hat.
  • Sunglasses with good UV protection.
  • Buff or neck gaiter.

Clothing :

  • Base layers (Merino Wool recommended).
  • Fleece or lightweight synthetic jacket.
  • Quick drying T-shirt.
  • A water and windproof layer (jacket and pants) eg. Gore-Tex.
  • A natural or synthetic down jacket.
  • Light gloves.
  • 1 or 2 pairs of walking trousers.
  • 1 or 2 pairs of shorts.
  • Casual clothes & footwear for evenings. One set is enough as you will not wear them for a long time.
  • Nightwear and underwear.

Footwear:

  • Broken-in hiking boots (very important).
  • Light hut sandals/flip flap or comfortable shoes for refuges.
  • Comfortable shoes for evenings in town (optional).
  • Good-quality merino wool walking socks.

For the night:

  • Sleeping bag liner - either silk, cotton or fleece (only if you're staying in dormitories in mountain inns, huts). Blankets and pillow are provided in mountains huts.
  • Headlamp and batteries (spare batteries too).
  • Earplugs.

Equipment :

  • Hiking backpack. A chest strap and waist strap are essential to help to distribute the weight. The size 30 L to 45 L is more than enough.
  • Large rucksack if you have booked luggage transfer.
  • Walking poles are highly recommended on Alpine trails.
  • Resealable bags are handy for convenient leak-proof storage.
  • Energy bars/snacks (2 per day)
  • Airtight and waterproof ‘dry bags' are great for keeping your clothes dry and storing your dirty laundry separate from clean clothes!
  • Cash & Cards (Euros and Swiss Francs).
  • Pocket knives or cutlery can be useful for picnics.
  • Water bottle or camelback - please be able to carry 2 liters of water.

Electronic & useful extras :

  • Travel adapter.
  • Phone, Camera, batteries and charger.
  • Book to read or Kindle.
  • Binoculars.
  • Notebook and pen.

Toiletries, Health & Personal Medical Kit :

  • Any personal medications you need to take.
  • Personal toiletries: shampoo, soap, shavers, moisturizer, travel towel (if you're staying in mountains Huts), etc
  • Sunscreen & lip balm - 30+ SPF
  • Toilet roll/tissues.
  • Travel towel for showering in refuges.

Note: All of these items can be purchased there. Please ask us if you'd like some advice about where to go to get any gear.

What to take with you in your day pack:
Please carry the following in your day pack, as a minimum:

  • 2 liters of water.
  • The roadbook from Mont Blanc Experience.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, lip balm.
  • Warm fleece or thermal layer and gloves.
  • Water proof layer.
  • Lunch
  • Hand sanitizer/soap and toilet paper.
  • Your camera.
  • Any money you want for snacks/drinks along the trail.

Important - take any personal medications you require during the day - you will not see your kit bag until evening.
The rest you can put into your main bag which will be carried to the next accommodation.

What about gear I want to leave before the trek?
Before departure for your trek you might pack your ‘town clothes' or anything you don't want on trek with you and ask your hotel (if you come back to the same hotel). If you want to do this, then consider bringing or buying a simple bag here for this purpose. We can also help you organize the storage of a larger suitcase, Please ask us for advice.

We gather security risk information from multiple sources: in-house research, monitoring specialized websites, meetings with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "safety and security" trips in the field, constant contact with our regional specialists, local teams on the ground, and France's travel agency federation.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that we cannot make any decisions for you.

If there is a clear and elevated risk, we reserve the right to:
