A vast region with unique geology, the Dolomites are home to astonishing massifs that form true limestone citadels. This trip invites you to discover spectacular landscapes and legendary trails through lush valleys, majestic passes, and imposing mountains. You will begin with a hike through the Five Towers of the Tofanes, then continue to breathtaking viewpoints such as Bos Pass and Lake Braies. The journey takes you through alpine pastures and wild mountains, with stops at Malga Ra Stua, the Pratopiazza refuge, and near the famous Tre Cime, the iconic peaks of the region. The Belle Dolomiti loop was absolutely stunning, a true gem in the heart of the Dolomites. The tour itself was very well organized, and we appreciated how it felt less crowded than many other popular routes in the region.

One aspect to keep in mind is the technical nature of the terrain. While the daily distances might not seem extreme on paper, the rugged trails made for long and demanding days, a shorter day in the middle of the loop would have been a welcome break to rest, rejuvenate and enjoy the view.

Despite that, we highly recommend this tour. If you're prepared for a challenge and looking for an unforgettable mountain experience off the beaten path, the Belle Dolomiti loop is a fantastic choice.

Day by day

Day 1

Arrival day in the Dolomites

Lodging : hotel. Included meals : dinner. Meals not included : breakfast, lunch.

Arrival in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the afternoon, a very typical and historical town in the Dolomites. It's a perfect place to spend your first night. Short transfer by local bus to your hotel in Pocol.

Day 2

Free time and hike to Dibona hut

Distance : 3,5 km to 7 km (2.1 mi to 4.3 mi) - Ascent : 350 m to 500 m (1,150 to 1,640 ft). 2,5 hrs to 4,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.

Take a short local bus transfer from Pocol to Cortina d'Ampezzo to make the most of your morning exploring this beautiful town. If you wish, you can also take a hike to Lake Ghedina to warm up for the next few days' trek.

We recommend leaving Cortina d'Ampezzo in the beginning of the afternoon. Transfer by bus to the Lagazuoi pass valley as far as Pocol (1,530m / 5,019 ft). Ascent along a path interspersed with a wide track to the Dibona mountain hut (2083m / 6,834 ft).

Day 3

From Dibona to Malga Ra Stua via Col de Bos pass

Distance : from 15,5 km (9,6 mi) to 18,5 km (11,4 mi) - Ascent : from 550m to 800 m (1,805 ft to 2,625 ft). Descent : 1150 m (3,770 ft). From 5,5 hrs to 6,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain inn. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch. Transfer : 15 minutes.
Climb above the hut towards the five Tofanes towers, superb rock faces listed as a natural park. Cross to the Col de Bos (2,330m / 7,645 ft), gateway to the magnificent Travenanzes valley. In the Dolomites, the term "col" refers to a small summit. A beautiful forest stretches along the foot of the valley, and passing under the Col Rosa, you reach the valley of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At San Uberto, you can enjoy a leisurely ascent or opt for a transfer to the Ra Stua mountain inn (1,668m / 5,472 ft) on a track.
Day 4

From Malga Ra Stua to Lago di Braies via Porta Sopra al Forno pass

Distance : 17,5 km (10,8 mi) - Ascent : 900 m (2,953 ft). Descent : 1100 m (3,608 ft). 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain inn. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Ascent along a magnificent path winding through sparkling lakes and verdant alpine meadows to the Biella hut (2,327m / 7,634 ft). We then leave the path leading to the Croda del Becco to reach the Porta Sopra al Forno pass (2,388m / 7,834 ft) and discover the other side. After crossing a small rocky spur without difficulty, a path leads us into a valley of mineral landscapes, taking us to the edge of the delightful Braies lake (1,494m / 4,901 ft), nestled in a majestic valley. Spend the night in a charming inn, where a convivial dinner await you.
Day 5

From Lago di Braies to Pratopiazza hut via Cavallo pass

Distance : 14 km (8,7 mi) - Ascent : 1150 m (3,772 ft). Descent : 650 m (2,132 ft). 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.

We reach the alpine pastures of the Col du Cavallo (2,287m / 7,503 ft), a verdant, high-altitude valley on a balcony, offering breathtaking views beneath the majestic Croda Rossa. At Gaisele, the trail becomes wilder, overlooking the picturesque village of Ponticello below. We then begin the descent to the Pratopiazza pastures, with the iconic Tre Cime di Lavaredo looming in the background, adding a grandiose touch to this enchanting landscape

Day 6

From Pratopiazza hut to the Tre Cime

Distance : 20,5 km (12,7 mi) - Ascent : 1300 m (4,265 ft). Descent : 900 m (2,950 ft). 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.

After crossing the Monte Specie pass, we plunge downhill through the forest into the Landro valley. We then climb up the Val Rienza, a breathtaking glacial valley, and cross the landscape to the entrance to the famous Tre Cime site. Here we pause to admire the three sharp, vertical peaks that are icons of the Dolomites and have attracted the world's best mountaineers. Depending on the day's weather, we can continue on foot or by bus to the Auronzo hut. With binoculars in hand, it's fascinating to watch the many climbers tackling these legendary walls, adding a captivating dynamic to this spectacular panorama.

PS : no luggage transfer this night (as the refuge is not reachable by car), for those who have opted for it.

Day 7

Tre Cime loop and Pocol

Distance : 6,5 km to 13 km (4 mi to 8 mi) - Ascent : from 200 m to 700 m (655 to 2,296 ft). Descent : from 200 m to 700 m (655 to 2,296 ft). From 2,5 hrs to 5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch. Transfer : from 1 hr to 1,5 hrs.

We embark on a magnificent loop, during which the Tre Cime, Paterno and Torre di Toblin reveal their fascinating aerial and underground itineraries. Along the way, we explore caves and tunnels carved into the mountains, remnants of military installations dating back to the beginning of the last century. Climbers tackle with determination the many via ferrata, a sports activity emblematic of this massif.

In the afternoon, local transfer from Tre Cime to Pocol, where we spend our last night.

PS: as an option, you can replace this loop around the Tre Cime with an easy via ferrata. Booking is essential, please ask our experts.
Day 8

Bye-bye Dolomites

Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Enjoy your last breakfast before checking out. Take the time to explore Cortina d'Ampezzo and the surroundings before heading off.

If you wish to arrive earlier or extend your stay, it's essential to book your accommodation in advance. We can arrange one or more extra nights at one of our partner hotels. Just ask !

  • Transportation to and from Cortina d'Ampezzo then Pocol.
  • Pack lunch (about €10-€15 per lunch depending on the location).
  • Shower in those huts that charge a fee.
  • Drinks, tips and personal expenses.
  • Public transportation and chairlifts during the tour.
  • Insurance for trip cancellation/interruption, lost/stolen baggage, or assistance.
  • Everything not described as "included".

Currencies

France and Italy are part of the Euro zone. You may find ATMs easily in the main cities and towns.
Better to have cash in the most remote areas to purchase extras (ex.: for drinks). Huts do not always accept credit cards.

Access

Access

This trip starts and ends in Pocol, near Cortina d'Ampezzo. The nearest airport for this trip is Venezia-Marco Polo airport. It takes about 2 hours to drive to the center of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

From Venice airport, there are different buses company to get to Cortina d'Ampezzo. The Bus timetables can be checked on the following websites:

  • With the Cortina Express buses, taking approximately 2h20. Departures are twice daily, usually in the afternoon. We strongly recommend checking their website for exact timetables and booking your tickets in advance to secure your seat.
  • With ATVO buses: in the same way as with the Cortina Express company, we recommend booking your tickets in advance and collecting them by the evening before at the latest. Two departures per day (usually in the morning).
Depending on your preferences, we can arrange a private cab transfer between the airport and Pocol.
We can book this for you, just ask our specialists. Please let us know your flight schedule so that we can organize your transfer as early as possible and in the time slot that suits you best.

During your trip

Transfers

Any necessary or optional travel during the tour is at your own expense. Some transfers are possible with the local company Dolomiti Bus.

  • Day 2: from Pocol to Cortina d'Ampezzo (round trip).
  • Day 6: from Misurina to Auronzo refuge (stop at the parking).
  • Day 7: from Auronzo refuge to Cortina d'Ampezzo and from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Pocol.

Lodging

The mountain inns, huts and hotels have been chosen for an optimum balance between the quality of the itinerary and comfort (type of rooms, conviviality and meals).
You'll stay mainly in mountain refuges, with 3 nights in hotels (Cortina d'Ampezzo or Pocol and Lago di Braies).

Mountain huts traditionally offer "dormitory". We've selected mountain huts offering rooms. But a mountain hut is still not a hotel. All rooms are not "double" and might be "shared rooms" up to four people depending on availability. Lavatory and shower are also often outside of the room shared with others. We will book the best-smallest room available on each accommodation depending on what's available when you book.

  • Day 1 and 7 are in hotel, so private double room are the standard. Equipped with every comfort, the hotel also features a wellness area with sauna and fitness center.
    The large restaurant offers traditional menus, featuring recipes from Mediterranean and Alpine cuisine.
  • Day 2: Dibona hut: 6-7-bed room. Right at the foot of the Tofanes massif, it's a great first day hike in the Dolomites;
  • Day 3: Malga Ra Stua hut: double or twin room;
  • Day 4: Lago di Braies hotel: double room. A special atmosphere for this historic hotel;
  • Day 5: Pratopiazza refuge: rooms of 2,3 or 4 ;
  • Day 6: Lavaredo refuge: rooms with 4 to 6 beds. The most intimate and comfortable of the refuges at the foot of the Tre Cime!

As the Dolomites is a very popular area, accommodation options can be limited. Depending on availability at the time of the booking, we might have to offer you an alternative accommodation, while try to keep the same level of comfort.

If the "original" accommodation is not available on the original itinerary, we might have to get you down to the valley in a comfortable hotel or inn.

As a last resort, to ensure an optimal itinerary, dormitories in mountain huts may be offered.

Don't worry, you'll receive all the details of your accommodation before the final confirmation of your trip, and you'll also have this information in your roadbook.

Note:

  • Odd number of people are considered with a triple room. Single room always depends on availability and is with a supplement.
  • We ask you to bring your own towel and sleeping bag liner. Lightweight and space-saving, this accessory guarantee better hygiene, particularly in areas frequented by hikers during the summer months.
  • Hot showers available every evening (sometimes for a fee).
  • At the mountain inn of Lago di Braies (day 4), proper attire is required (closed shoes and long pants, hiking boots accepted).
  • Our stays in the Dolomites near Cortina d'Ampezzo are an opportunity to extend your trip to the city of the Doges. Venice is an architectural masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A must-see!

Meals

Our goal is to ensure that you eat well-balanced meals suited for the effort required each day, and to lighten your pack load as much as possible.

Breakfast :
The hotels offer a generous and varied buffet: pastries, fresh bread, homemade jams, fruit and cereals. Savory lovers will also find something to their liking, with a choice of breads, cheeses, ham and eggs.

In mountain inns or huts, breakfasts are often simple: bread, butter, jam, coffee, tea and orange juice. If you need extra energy for your day's hiking, remember to pack dried fruit, cereal bars or other snacks.

Dinners :
In the hotels, dinner typically consists of a fixed three-course menu, including a starter, main course, and dessert.

In mountain inns or huts, meals are convivial moments when you share the table with other hikers. These meals are a real highlight of the day, providing an opportunity to savor home-cooked meals while sharing with people from all over the world. Meals generally consist of a soup starter, followed by a meat-based main course with carbohydrates (pasta, rice, polenta, etc.), then cheese and dessert. If you wish, you can add a beer or glass of wine to your meal for an additional charge.

If you have strict dietary constraints, we invite you to communicate them to us before departure, in your personal space.

Lunches:
You can buy local products in supermarkets in the valley, or directly in some mountain inns on the way. If you are staying in the mountains, you also have the option of ordering a packed lunch from the refuge upon your arrival, for around 15 euros per day. These packed lunches usually include one or two sandwiches, a fruit, a bottle of water and a cookie or chocolate bar.

Drinks:
Beverages (excluding water) are not included. Please pay for all drinks consumed on site before your departure, to avoid any additional charges after your stay.

Luggage transfer

Depending on the package you choose:

  • With luggage transfers included: you will only carry what you need for the day's hike. Your bags are transported to your accommodations by vehicle, and you will have access to them every night (except at the Tre Cime on day 6), which is not reachable by car, you will carry spare clothes for the night and the day after).

  • Without luggage transfers: plan to carry everything you need for the entire week on your back (pay attention to weight!).

Trails

Well-marked itinerary, previously recognized by our guides. You are in charge of your route and must know how to read a map and use a compass. You also have precise directions in the "Mon Roadbook" app and in the paper roadbook that will be given to you before departure (maps, descriptive plan, specific information...). The "Mon Roadbook" app allows you to centralize all the necessary information for your trip:
  • The identification of service providers operating during your stay
  • GPS guidance on a map background
  • Photos of crossings
  • The various points of interest on the hike: natural or heritage.
This application, included for this trip, must be downloaded before your departure and works offline (without network).

For each stage, make sure you check the latest information on trail conditions; the manager at your accommodations should also be able to provide you with up-to-date information if you ask.

Itineraries

Our elevation gains are calculated based on altitude differences provided on maps, not by GPS, which, for technical reasons (GPS altitude inaccuracies + statistical dispersion), often give overestimated elevation gains, sometimes by up to 20%.

What you need to know

Be prepared for the weather:
The weather in mountains can change very quickly. the weather forecast is quite accurate for the next 3 upcoming days, but not that much further. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoon when the weather is hot, they are very located and show up very quickly. Wake up earlier in the morning when the weather forecast announces it, you will have crossed the high pass before it starts. Passes and ridge are not safe is the case of thunder. Take advice from your host the day before.

Considering the Environment:
While trekking you have to be careful not to destroy the environment you are enjoying so much. It is not only for your enjoyment, but people and wildlife also rely on this environment.

Here are some simple tips:

  • Pick up any litter along the trail,
  • Burn all your toilet paper and bury your faeces, make sure you go at least 50m away from any water source,
  • Drink tap water instead of mineral water as plastic bottles are an unnecessary waste,
  • Stick to the trails to prevent erosion and damage to fragile alpine flora,
  • Ensure all rubbish is packed and bring them back down to the villages.

Insurance :
All tour participants should obtain their own personal insurance which covers medical and emergency evacuation at a minimum. You will of course also want cover for loss or damage to personal effects, flight or trip cancellation etc. Please ask us for advice.

Final tips!

  • To ensure that you have the best time possible, please respect local traditions, customs, values and the environment.
  • Respect privacy when taking photographs.
  • Your attempts at speaking some Italian will open hearts and break the ice!
  • Protect the natural environment, see above.

Activities

Option "via ferrata"
 
It is possible to do the via ferratas of Paterno or Torre di Tobline on day 7. You will meet your Italian mountain guide (two people minimum and one guide for two to four participants). All the necessary technical equipment will be provided (harness, via ferrata lanyard, helmet).
Reservation is required, if you're interested, feel free to ask!

Required before leaving

Health

Some tips for staying healthy:
Tap water is mostly good for drinking all other the Alps. Unless notified as not, you can consider it as drinkable. Even if they are recyclable we request you consider the waste impact of your bottles.
Your hands are perhaps your biggest enemy in terms of your health as they get very dirty during the day. Wash your hands before every meal or snack. People often think they get sick from the food, but it's far more likely they forgot to wash their hands!

During the trek, don't try to overpass your strength and walk too high, too quickly! Keep a regular pace and take time to enjoy the view while walking.
Listen to your guide and take their advice as they are trained to look after your safety.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please advise us when booking your trek so that we can cater for you. Note: sometimes not all dietary requirements are able to be met, but please inform us and we will certainly do our best! 

Recommended vaccinations

Please check to make sure that all your vaccinations are current: DPT, whooping cough, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.

Dentist and general physician

We recommend a checkup with both before leaving on your trip.

Getting ready

Physical fitness level 3

To take full advantage of your trip, make sure that you stay in good shape by walking or hiking least once per week (around 15km) on a trail with considerable vertical gain (250m/hr) or by participating in a moderately intense athletic activity for 1 to 1.5hrs.

Your first aid kit

For the medication and pain relievers listed below, we recommend that you check with your doctor beforehand, adding what you need based on personal requirements and the specificities of your trip.

  • An analgesic.
  • An anti-inflammatory (pills or gels).
  • An anti-diarrheal tablets
  • A disinfectant, band aids (several sizes), mole skin, sterile compresses, medical tape, Steri-Strips,

Gear list

What we supply for your trek:

We provide 1 set for every 4 participants, which includes detailed hiking maps of the region, and a roadbook describing your itinerary and trip (a lot of tips and some alternative routes are included).
You will have access to our 24/24 7/7 support hotline to assist you during your trip.
Each participant will have access on his phone to our "Roadbook" app which includes an itinerary descriptions as well GPS guidance.
 
What you need to bring:

If you don't have the luggage transfer option, pack light, remember that you will have to carry all your stuff during the whole trip. We recommend that your backpack doesn't exceed 10 to 15% of your weight. Take only the essentials.

Essentials:

  • Hiking backpack. A chest strap and waist strap are essential to help to distribute the weight. The size 30 L to 45 L, will depend on whether you have booked a luggage transfer or not.
  • Comfortable and worn in trekking boots.
  • Warm hat.
  • Cap.
  • Sun glasses.
  • Good quality Merino Wool walking socks.
  • Base layer tops - Merino Wool is the best choice.
  • Warm mid-layer tops.
  • A water and windproof layer (jacket and pants) eg. Gore-Tex.
  • 1x Walking trousers.
  • Light gloves.
  • Shorts.
  • Buff or Snood.
  • A natural or synthetic down jacket.
  • Casual clothes & footwear for evenings. One set is enough as you will not wear them for a long time.
  • Nightwear and underwear.
  • Sleeping bag liner - either silk, cotton or fleece (only if you're staying in dormitories in mountain Huts).
  • Sandals or flip flops. 

Essential Accessories:

  • Personal toiletries: shampoo, soap, shavers, moisturizer, travel towel (if you're staying in mountains Huts), etc.
  • Toilet roll/tissues.
  • Ziplock bags are handy for convenient leak-proof storage.
  • Sun block and lip balm.
  • Electrical socket adapter.
  • Energy bars/snacks.
  • Personal first aid kit + any personal medications you need to take.
  • Phone, Camera, batteries and charger.
  • Airtight and waterproof ‘dry bags' are great for keeping your clothes dry and storing your dirty laundry separate from clean clothes!
  • Head torch and batteries (spare batteries too).
  • Walking poles are highly recommended on Alps paths.
  • Cash & Cards (Euros and Swiss Francs).
  • Pocket knives or cutlery can be useful for picnics.
  • WATER - please be able to carry 2 liters of water.
  • Your sense of humor and adventure!

If you've booked the luggage transfer:

  • Duffle bag (soft) and not exceeding 15 kg to carry your extra stuff.

Useful extras:

  • Binoculars.
  • Book to read or Kindle.
  • Notebook and pen.
  • Ear plugs.

Note: All of these items can be purchased there. Please ask us if you'd like some advice about where to go to get any gear.

What to take with you in your day pack:
Please carry the following in your day pack, as a minimum:

  • 2 liters of water.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, lip balm.
  • Warm fleece or thermal layer and gloves.
  • Water proof layer.
  • Lunch
  • Head torch.
  • Hand sanitizer/soap and toilet paper.
  • Your camera.
  • Any money you want for snacks/drinks along the trail.
Important - take any personal medications you require during the day - you will not see your kit bag until evening.

The rest you can put into your main bag which will be carried to the next accommodation, only if you've subscribed to this option.

What about gear I want to leave before the trek?
Before departure for your trek you might pack your ‘town clothes' or anything you don't want on trek with you and ask your hotel (if you come back to the same hotel). If you want to do this, then consider bringing or buying a simple bag here for this purpose. We can also help you organise the storage of a larger suitcase, Please ask us for advice.

First aid kit:
It is recommended that you bring a small personal medical kit including your preferred painkillers, throat lozenges, plasters, strapping tape for blisters, etc. If you are taking regular medication you MUST bring those medicines with you PLUS an extra supply in case one pack is lost. If you have any allergies and/or take any medications, you MUST advise us when booking your trek!

Mont Blanc Experience keeps you informed and is fully transparent when it comes to the potential risks. We gather security risk information from multiple sources: in-house research, monitoring specialized websites, meetings with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "safety and security" trips in the field, constant contact with our regional specialists, local teams on the ground, and France's travel agency federation.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that we cannot make any decisions for you.

If there is a clear and elevated risk, we reserve the right to:

— Reinforce our guide team (for guided trips).
— Modify the itinerary for our tours.
— Place a tour or destination on hiatus for an extended period of time when we consider the level of risk to be too high.
