Hike the legendary Alta Via no. 1 trail through the Dolomites! This through-hike takes you from Lake Braies, the jewel of the Northern Dolomites, located just a stone's throw from the Austrian border, to the beautiful mountain town of Belluno. During your journey, pass through several of the Dolomites' legendary "gruppi" (sub-ranges), from the more Germanic-flavored Southern Tyrol to the very Italian region of Venetia. As you make your way from hut to hut, enjoy exploring the spectacular geology of this truly unique mountain range as well as learn all about the singular history of a mountain culture straddling the border between Northern and Southern Europe.

The crossing of the Dolomites is a very popular trip. We recommend that you book your journey as soon as possible! Moreover, since availability for summer 2026 is very limited, some stages of the crossing may be adjusted to maximize your chances of departure.

Hiking : a relatively accessible activity, hiking offers the opportunity to explore a country or a region up close, on foot, and to meet and mingle with the locals. Day by day

Day 1

Welcome in Cortina d'Ampezzo, pearl of the Dolomites

Lodging : hotel.
Arrival in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the afternoon - a jewel of the Dolomites, steeped in history and mountain charm. Nestled in a wide alpine valley surrounded by towering peaks, Cortina is the perfect place to begin your adventure.
Once settled in at your hotel, take a stroll through the elegant streets lined with traditional chalets and cafés, soak up the serene mountain atmosphere, and enjoy the unique blend of Italian style and alpine authenticity before setting off on your unforgettable hiking journey.
Day 2

From Cortina d'Ampezzo to Pederu via Lago Di Braies

Distance : 13.5 km (8.5 mi) - Ascent : 850 m (2,790 ft) . Descent : 800 m (2,625 ft). 5,5 of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
Spend the day exploring the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park.
In the morning, take a bus from your hotel in Cortina to reach the magnificent Lago di Braies, the starting point of your hike.
From there, leave the steep-sided valley of the lake and head into the rocky, mineral landscapes of the Forcella de Riciogogn Pass (2331 m / 7,647 ft).
The descent continues along a pleasant, easy trail via the Sennes Hut, then through the forest to the Pederü Hut, located at the foot of the Fanes Plateau.
Day 3

From Pederu to Lagazuoi mountain hut

Distance : 18 km (11 mi) - Ascent : 1600 m (5,250 ft). Descent : 400m (1,310 ft). 7,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Enjoy the lunar landscapes up the first climb of the day, as well as the amazing views as you make your way to Fanes Plateau, where four huts sit along the edge of the areas beautiful alpine meadows. The trail continues through several pastures, leads up and over Limo Pass (2174 m / 7,132 ft) and down the short descent to the Gran Fanes Hut, which is surrounded by alpine pastures and meadows. Take your time during the long climb to Lago Pass (2486 m / 8,156 ft). On the other side of the pass, the tight switchbacks on the descent towards the small lake are simply spectacular. Another short climb takes you to the top of Lagazuo Peak (2752 m / 9,028 ft) and then to the hut where you will spend the night. Admire the splendid surroundings landscapes while enjoying a beer on the terrace.
Day 4

From Lagazuoi to the Nuvolau Plateau

Distance : 6 km (4 mi) - Ascent : 500 m (1,640 ft). Descent : 650 m (2,132 ft). 4,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Take advantage of this relatively short hike to recover from the prior day's effort. Hike down to Falzarego Pass by either taking the trail or the Galleria Lagazuoi tunnels, an underground network built during the First World War. You can also take the aerial tram. From the pass, ascend through the rocky, mineral landscapes until you reach Averau Pass. Cross over the pass and continue to the hut of the same name. Take the short detour around the Cinque Torri, a popular place to rock climb, and then meet up with the historical trail that the military used in 1917. One final effort takes you to the hut and the top of Nuvolau Peak (2575 m / 8,448 ft), which offers, once again, spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
Day 5

From the Nuvolau Plateau to Città di Fiume hut via Giau Pass

Distance : 13 km (8 mi) - Ascent : 450 m (1,475 ft). Descent : 1050 m (3,445 ft). 5,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Today's long hike, with very little vertical gain, continues to lead you through the beautiful landscapes of this unique mountain range. Instead of climbing the via ferrata, take the trail back down to the Averau Hut, which you walked past the day before. Hike along a balcony trail beneath the cliffs of Nuvolau until you reach the Alta Via 1 trail at Giau Pass. From Giau Pass, continue the days adventure through rocky terrain and beautiful alpine meadows as you make your way up and over three mountain passes and all the way to Forcella Ambrizzola (2277 m / 7,470 ft).
From there, head due south, hiking over another three passes until you reach a forest road that takes you along easy terrain to the Città di Fiume Hut (1918 m / 6,292 ft).
Day 6

From Città di Fiume hut to the Venezia mountain hut

Distance : 7 km (4.5 mi) - Ascent : 1000 m (3,280 ft). Descent : 600 m (1,968 ft). 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
While shorter in distance than the day before, today's hike has a lot vertical gain and takes you through much more technical terrain. The objective: hike around majestic Mt. Pelmo (3168 m elevation), often referred to as "Gods Throne". The day starts with a steady climb on trails through the woods and alpine meadows to a first pass, Forcella Forada (1977 m / 6,486 ft). From here the terrain becomes more strenuous. A section of trail with a cable handrail takes you to a place where you can see all the ground you have covered over the past few days. The next strenuous section climbs through scree and rocky terrain to Forcella d'Arcia Pass. The effort is rewarded with panoramic views of the eastern part of the Dolomites. Although this marks the top of the days last climb, you still need a little fuel left in the gas tank and your quads to make it down the scree field and the gentler section of trail that takes you to the Venezia mountain hut.
Day 7

From Venezia hut to the Tissi hut

Distance : 15.5 km (9.5 mi) - Ascent : 1200 m (3,937 ft). Descent : 900 m (2,953 ft). 6,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Take one last look at Mount Pelmo before leaving it behind to explore the Civetta massif, known for its steep cliffs, popular with climbers. After following the southern face of the "Throne of God," you take a pleasant, slightly rolling trail through a pine forest, leading you to the Palafavera valley.
The ascent begins on the resort's ski slopes, then the terrain becomes more alpine, guiding you up to the Coldaï refuge and its lake. You then continue along the Civetta massif, before tackling one last climb that will take you to the Tissi refuge.
Day 8

From Tissi hut to the Carestiato hut

Distance : 14.5 km (9 mi) - Ascent : 800 m (2,625 ft). Descent : 1200 m (3,937 ft). 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Today, the traverse continues along the base of Mt. Civetta and its eight satellite peaks. The first goal of the day: the Vazzoler Hut, which offers spectacular views of Torre Venezia as well as the option of stopping to enjoy a cup of coffee in its beautiful courtyard.
Next, walk downhill along a dirt road, cross a few river beds, and then start ascending through the forest that leads to Forcella Del Camp. From there, make your way downhill towards the Carestiato Hut.
Day 9

From Carestiato hut to the Pian de Fontana hut

Distance : 18 km (11 mi) - Ascent : 1100 m (3,610 ft). Descent : 1300 m (4,265 ft). 7,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : mountain hut. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
The day starts with a steady descent on a dirt road that leads to the C. Tomé Hut, near Passo Duran. Take the road to the pass until you reach the next trailhead, and then follow the balcony trail to the base of Tamer Grande Peak (2547 m / 8,356 ft). Cross through the woods and meadows until you reach the Forcella Moschesin Fort ruins.
The hike continues towards the Premperet Hut, located at the foot of Cima di Pramper (2409 m / 7,903 ft). The final climb of this leg also leads you through rocky terrain to the day's high point, Cima de Zità di Mezzo (2400 m / 7,874 ft).
Enjoy the well-earned, beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, and then descend into Van de Fora Valley on your way to the Pian di Fontana mountain hut.
Day 10

From Fontana hut to Belluno

Distance : 12 km (7.5 mi) - Ascent : 300 m (984 ft). Descent : 1500 m (4,920 ft). 4 hrs of hiking.
Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
On your final day, enjoy walking primarily downhill. Start with one last short climb through the forest before the day's long descent, which passes by the Bianchet Hut. The trail slaloms through the bottom of Cordevol Valley, alternating between forest roads, and steep narrow trails between the trees.
A few stone steps mark the end of your journey. Walk to the La Muda bus stop to take the bus back to Belluno.

The price does not include:

  • Transportation to the meeting point at the start of the trip and from the point where the trip officially ends.
  • Dinner in Cortina d'Ampezzo (day 1) and Pederu hut (day 2).
  • Insurance for trip cancellation/interruption, lost/stolen baggage, or assistance.
  • Transfers during the tour.
  • For reservations made less than 15 days before the start, all additional fees for priority processing.
  • Anything that is not specified in the "included in the price" list.

Other expenses:

  • Local transport transfers: 
    - Day 2 : the shuttle bus from Cortina to Lago di Braies, approximately €20.

France and Italy are part of the Euro zone. You may find ATMs easily in the main cities and towns.

Bressanone is the entry point of this itinerary in the Adige valley, close to Bolzano :

Transfers

No transfers during the tour, except for the transfer to the starting point of the first hike and the return to Belluno or another town at the end of the trip.
  • Day 2 : shuttle bus from Cortina to Lago di Braies.
  • Day 3 : the Lagazuoi cable car (optional).
  • Day 10: shuttle bus between La Pissa and Belluno.
NB : at the start and/or end of the season, some public shuttles necessary for the tour are not operational. We will offer alternative solutions and give you taxi contacts in the roadbook.
All transfers and lifts are at your own expense.

We draw your attention to the fact that wearing a seat belt is compulsory at the front and rear in all vehicles you use during the trip, when they are equipped with one, regardless of the regulations in effect in the country visited. Lodging

The mountain inns, huts and hotels have been chosen for an optimum balance between the quality of the itinerary and comfort (type of rooms, conviviality and meals).
You'll stay mainly in mountain refuges, with 1 night in hotel (Cortina d'Ampezzo).

Mountain huts traditionally offer mainly "dormitory". Lavatory and shower are also often outside of the room shared with others. We will book the best-smallest room available on each accommodation depending on what's available when you book.

  • Day 1 : 3* hotel at Cortina d'Ampezzo, a very special atmosphere in the city;
  • Day 2, Fanes natural Park area at Pederu mountain inn on a twin/double room basis in B&B.
  • Day 3: Lagazuoi refuge in dormitory basis (6 to 14 beds). This accommodation is very popular in the Dolomites, and availability is limited. Depending on the reservations, accommodation in the valley may be offered to you. However, this will not prevent you from enjoying a beer on the refuge's terrace.
  • Day 4 in the Cinque Torri area. Depending on availability, we can offer you a night at the Nuvolau, Scoiattoli, or 5 Torri huts, in shared rooms with 4 to 8 beds. Dormitory accommodation includes 4 to 12 beds with shared bathrooms.
  • Day 5: Citta di Fiume mountain hut. Shared room from 4 to 6 beds. Hot shower available with extra cost.
  • Day 6 at Venezia hut. Dormitory basis from 4 to 10 beds. Bring some cash because it's not always possible to pay with your credit card.
  • Day 7, Tissi mountain hut. Dormitory basis from 5 to 16 beds. Bathroom facilities are shared and access to the shower is at an additional cost.
  • Day 8 at Carestiato mountain hut. Shared room of 4 to 5 bunk-beds with a shared bathroom.
  • Day 9 at  Pian de Fontana hut, on dormitory basis with cold shower.

As the Dolomites is a very popular area, accommodation options can be limited. Depending on availability at the time of the booking, we might have to offer you an alternative accommodation, while try to keep the same level of comfort.

If the "original" accommodation is not available on the original itinerary, we might have to get you down to the valley in a comfortable hotel, mountain inn or hut.

You'll receive all the details of your accommodation before the final confirmation of your trip, and you'll also have this information in your roadbook.

Note:
  • Odd number of people are considered with a triple room. Single room is not possible in this tour.
  • We ask you to bring your own towel and sleeping bag liner. Lightweight and space-saving, this accessory guarantee better hygiene, particularly in areas frequented by hikers during the summer months.

Meals

Our goal is to ensure that you eat well-balanced meals suited for the effort required each day, and to lighten your pack load as much as possible.

Breakfast :
The hotels offer a generous and varied buffet: pastries, fresh bread, homemade jams, fruit and cereals. Savory lovers will also find something to their liking, with a choice of breads, cheeses, ham and eggs.

In mountain inns or huts, breakfasts are often simple: bread, butter, jam, coffee, tea and orange juice. If you need extra energy for your day's hiking, remember to pack dried fruit, cereal bars or other snacks.

Dinners :

Dinner in Cortina is not included to give you all option in town and a dinner on your own. 

In mountain inns or huts, meals are convivial moments when you share the table with other hikers. These meals are a real highlight of the day, providing an opportunity to savor home-cooked meals while sharing with people from all over the world. Meals generally consist of a soup starter, followed by a meat-based main course with carbohydrates (pasta, rice, polenta, etc.), then cheese and dessert. If you wish, you can add a beer or glass of wine to your meal for an additional charge.
Dinner is not included at Pederu hut on day 2. You'll have to pay it directly at the hut.

If you have strict dietary constraints, we invite you to communicate them to us before departure, in your personal space.

Lunches:
As you are staying mainly in the mountains, you have the option of ordering a packed lunch from the refuge upon your arrival, for around 15 euros per day. These packed lunches usually include one or two sandwiches, a fruit, a bottle of water and a cookie or chocolate bar.

Drinks:
Beverages (excluding water) are not included. Please pay for all drinks consumed on site before your departure, to avoid any additional charges after your stay.

Luggage transfer

Without baggage transfer. You carry all of your belongings for the trip in your bag (watch out for its weight!).

 

Trails

Well-marked itinerary, previously recognized by our guides. You are in charge of your route and must know how to read a map and use a compass. You also have precise directions in the "Mon Roadbook" app and in the paper roadbook that will be given to you before departure (maps, descriptive plan, specific information...). The "Mon Roadbook" app allows you to centralize all the necessary information for your trip:
  • The identification of service providers operating during your stay
  • GPS guidance on a map background
  • Photos of crossings
  • The various points of interest on the hike: natural or heritage.

This application, included for this trip, must be downloaded before your departure and works offline (without network).

For each stage, make sure you check the latest information on trail conditions; the manager at your accommodations should also be able to provide you with up-to-date information if you ask.

Itineraries

Our elevation gains are calculated based on altitude differences provided on maps, not by GPS, which, for technical reasons (GPS altitude inaccuracies + statistical dispersion), often give overestimated elevation gains, sometimes by up to 20%.

What you need to know

Be prepared for the weather:
The weather in mountains can change very quickly. the weather forecast is quite accurate for the next 3 upcoming days, but not that much further. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoon when the weather is hot, they are very located and show up very quickly. Wake up earlier in the morning when the weather forecast announces it, you will have crossed the high pass before it starts. Passes and ridge are not safe is the case of thunder. Take advice from your host the day before.

Considering the Environment:
While trekking you have to be careful not to destroy the environment you are enjoying so much. It is not only for your enjoyment, but people and wildlife also rely on this environment.
 
Here are some simple tips:

  • Pick up any litter along the trail,
  • Burn all your toilet paper and bury your faeces, make sure you go at least 50m away from any water source,
  • Drink tap water instead of mineral water as plastic bottles are an unnecessary waste,
  • Stick to the trails to prevent erosion and damage to fragile alpine flora,
  • Ensure all rubbish is packed and bring them back down to the villages.

Insurance :
All tour participants should obtain their own personal insurance which covers medical and emergency evacuation at a minimum. You will of course also want cover for loss or damage to personal effects, flight or trip cancellation etc. Please ask us for advice.

Final tips!

  • To ensure that you have the best time possible, please respect local traditions, customs, values and the environment.
  • Respect privacy when taking photographs.
  • Your attempts at speaking some French or Italian will open hearts and break the ice!
  • Protect the natural environment, see above.

Required before leaving

Health

Some tips for staying healthy:
Tap water is mostly good for drinking all other the Alps. Unless notified as not, you can consider it as drinkable. Even if they are recyclable we request you consider the waste impact of your bottles.
Your hands are perhaps your biggest enemy in terms of your health as they get very dirty during the day. Wash your hands before every meal or snack. People often think they get sick from the food, but it's far more likely they forgot to wash their hands!

During the trek, don't try to overpass your strength and walk too high, too quickly! Keep a regular pace and take time to enjoy the view while walking.
Listen to your guide and take their advice as they are trained to look after your safety.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please advise us when booking your trek so that we can cater for you. Note: sometimes not all dietary requirements are able to be met, but please inform us and we will certainly do our best! 

Recommended vaccinations

Please check to make sure that all your vaccinations are current: DPT, whooping cough, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B.

Dentist and general physician

We recommend a checkup with both before leaving on your trip.

Getting ready

Physical fitness level 4

To take full advantage of your trip, make sure that you stay in good shape by walking or hiking at least once per week (around 15km to 18km) on a trail with considerable vertical gain (350m/hr) or by participating in a moderately intense athletic activity to build endurance.

Your first aid kit

For the medication and pain relievers listed below, we recommend that you check with your doctor beforehand, adding what you need based on personal requirements and the specificities of your trip.

  • An analgesic.
  • An anti-inflammatory (pills or gels).

  • A disinfectant, band aids (several sizes), mole skin, sterile compresses, medical tape, Steri-Strips,

What we supply for your trek:

We provide 1 set for every 4 participants, which includes detailed hiking maps of the region, and a roadbook describing your itinerary and trip (a lot of tips and some alternative routes are included).
You will have access to our 24/24 7/7 support hotline to assist you during your trip.
Each participant will have access on his phone to our "Roadbook" app which includes an itinerary descriptions as well GPS guidance.
 
What you need to bring:

You don't have the luggage transfer with this your so, pack light, remember that you will have to carry all your stuff during the whole trip. We recommend that your backpack doesn't exceed 10 to 15% of your weight. Take only the essentials.

Essentials:

  • Hiking backpack. A chest strap and waist strap are essential to help to distribute the weight. The size 30 L to 45 L, will depend on whether you have booked a luggage transfer or not.
  • Comfortable and worn in trekking boots.
  • Warm hat.
  • Cap.
  • Sun glasses.
  • Good quality Merino Wool walking socks.
  • Base layer tops - Merino Wool is the best choice.
  • Warm mid-layer tops.
  • A water and windproof layer (jacket and pants) eg. Gore-Tex.
  • 1x Walking trousers.
  • Light gloves.
  • Shorts.
  • Buff or Snood.
  • A natural or synthetic down jacket.
  • Casual clothes & footwear for evenings. One set is enough as you will not wear them for a long time.
  • Nightwear and underwear.
  • Sleeping bag liner - either silk, cotton or fleece (only if you're staying in dormitories in mountain Huts).
  • Sandals or flip flops.

  • Personal toiletries: shampoo, soap, shavers, moisturizer, travel towel (if you're staying in mountains Huts), etc.

  • Phone, Camera, batteries and charger.
  • Airtight and waterproof ‘dry bags' are great for keeping your clothes dry and storing your dirty laundry separate from clean clothes!
  • Head torch and batteries (spare batteries too).
  • Walking poles are highly recommended on Alps paths.
  • Cash & Cards (Euros)
  • Pocket knives or cutlery can be useful for picnics.
  • WATER - please be able to carry 2 liters of water.

Useful extras:

  • Binoculars.
  • Book to read or Kindle.
  • Notebook and pen.
  • Ear plugs.
Important - take any personal medications you require during the day - you will not see your kit bag until evening.

The rest you can put into your main bag which will be carried to the next accommodation, only if you've subscribed to this option.

What about gear I want to leave before the trek?
Before departure for your trek you might pack your ‘town clothes' or anything you don't want on trek with you and ask your hotel (if you come back to the same hotel). If you want to do this, then consider bringing or buying a simple bag here for this purpose. We can also help you organize the storage of a larger suitcase, Please ask us for advice.

First aid kit:
It is recommended that you bring a small personal medical kit including your preferred painkillers, throat lozenges, plasters, strapping tape for blisters, etc. If you are taking regular medication you MUST bring those medicines with you PLUS an extra supply in case one pack is lost. If you have any allergies and/or take any medications, you MUST advise us when booking your trek!

We gather security risk information from multiple sources: in-house research, monitoring specialized websites, meetings with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "safety and security" trips in the field, constant contact with our regional specialists, local teams on the ground, and France's travel agency federation.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that we cannot make any decisions for you.

If there is a clear and elevated risk, we reserve the right to:

— Reinforce our guide team (for guided trips).
— Modify the itinerary for our tours.
— Place a tour or destination on hiatus for an extended period of time when we consider the level of risk to be too high.
