I did self-guided hiking out of Chamonix and Courmayeur. Hiking on Mt Blanc was an exceptional experience. This trip was, for the most part, well planned, but there were a few rough edges with one hotel and some of the hikes.

Day by day

Day 1

Welcome in Chamonix !

Lodging : hotel. Meals not included.
Getting to the charming mountain town of Chamonix Mont Blanc is child's play, whether by train, taxi or shuttle bus. Once there, make yourself comfortable in your hotel, stroll through Chamonix's picturesque cobbled streets and soak up the peaceful atmosphere before setting off on an unforgettable hiking adventure.
Day 2

Lake Blanc and Chéserys lakes

Distance : 9,5 km (6.1 mi) - Ascent : 500 m (1,640 ft). Descent : 500 m (1,640 ft). 4 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
This day in the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges massif, facing Mont-Blanc, will offer you breathtaking panoramas of glaciers and legendary peaks towering over 4,000 meters!

Take the cable car to La Flégère, then begin the famous balcony path that leads to the stunning Lac Blanc (2,352 m / 7,716 ft), a true mirror reflecting the surrounding mountains. Continue on to the Chéserys lakes, crystal-clear gems where the highest peaks of the Mont-Blanc massif are perfectly mirrored, offering an unforgettable spectacle.

Then, descend on foot back to La Flégère and take the cable car back to Chamonix.

Day 3

Top of Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers cog train

Distance : 8,5 km (5.2 mi) - Ascent : 350 m (1,148 ft). Descent : 500 m (1,640 ft). 3,5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
From Chamonix, take the famous cable car to the top of l'Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m / 12,605 ft). Take time to visit the area and enjoy the amazing view on the Mont Blanc summit!
Descend back half way with the lift to the intermediate station of Plan de l'Aiguille (2,350m / 7,710 ft). Here starts the hike of the day. After a short descent to the refuge of the same name, take the famous Grand Balcon Nord route which crosses under all the Aiguilles of Chamonix, from the Aiguille du Plan to the Aiguille de la République. The itinerary passes at the foot of the Blaitière and Nantillons glaciers. A short climb leads us to the Signal Forbes (2,200 m / 7,218 ft) offering a panoramic view of the Mer de Glace and the North face of the Grandes Jorasses in particular. A stop on the Montenvers site, before going back down with the famous red cog-train to Chamonix.
Day 4

Brévent Lake and Aiguillette des Houches - Courmayeur

Distance : 9km to 12,5 km (5,5 mi to 7,7 mi) - Ascent : 200 m (656 ft). Descent : 550 m to 1650 m (1,805 ft to 5,413 ft). 4 hrs to 6 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner. Transfer : around 45 min.
From Chamonix, take the cable car to go up to the summit of Brévent (2,525 m / 8,284 ft). Still facing the Mont Blanc, a day where you alternate ascents and descents on short slopes until l'Aiguillette des Houches. You are surrounded by the mineral landscapes of the Aiguilles Rouges on one side, the Mont Blanc massif on the other, with its famous glaciers and summits : Argentière glacier, Aiguille Verte, Mer de Glace, les Drus, Aiguille du Midi, Mont Blanc...
The hike end with the descent to Parc Merlet and Les Houches.
Return back to Chamonix with the local shuttle, then you'll enjoy a private transfer to Courmayeur where we spend the next 3 nights.
 
NB: this hike can be shortened by doing the round trip between the Aiguillette des Houches and the Brévent station (approx. 9 km, 550 m ascent and descent and 4 h of hiking).
Day 5

Welcome in Italy! Val Ferret, Elena hut and Grand Col Ferret

Distance : 9 km (5,5 mi) - Ascent : 750 m (2,460 ft). Descent : 750 m (2,460 ft). 5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner. Transfer : 40 min (round trip).
The local shuttle takes you to the end of Val Ferret. You follow a pleasant trail that leads you to the Elena refuge (2,061 m / 6,761 ft), nestled at the foot of the majestic Pré-de-Bard glacier. If you're in good shape and the weather allows, you can hike up to the Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m / 8,323 ft) and set foot in Switzerland, enjoying the stunning views that stretch out before you.

You will then descend along the same path, taking in the beauty of the surroundings one last time, before reaching Arnuva, where a bus will be waiting to take you back to Courmayeur.

Day 6

Val Veny valley

Distance : 12.5 km (8 mi) - Ascent : 600 m (1,968 ft). Descent : 600 m (1,968 ft). 5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Discovering the Val Vény, you will hike to the Miage Glacier Lake and Lake Combal (1970 m / 6,463 ft). A beautiful alluvial plain, created by the natural barrier of the glacier, promotes the observation of unique vegetation!You can continue up to Elisbetta hut where you can enjoy a drink on the sunny terrace.
If the weather permits and your physical condition allows, you will make a detour via the Chécrouit Pass (1956 m / 6,417 ft) to better admire the impressive Italian face of Mont-Blanc's summit. 

NB : In July and August, you can use the ski lift from Chécrouit to Dolonne, then reach Courmayeur by foot (30 mn walk)

Day 7

Val Ferret, Bonatti hut and Bertone hut - Chamonix

Distance : 13 km (8 mi) - Ascent : 500 m (1,640 ft). Descent : 1250 m (4,101 ft). 5 hrs of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner. Transfer : around 1h30.
Take the bus towards Val Ferret, a true gem of preserved nature. You will embark on a magnificent hike through alpine meadows, reaching the Bertone refuge (1,996 m), a perfect spot to take in breathtaking panoramic views. The imposing Italian slopes of Mont-Blanc tower over you, and you are at the foot of the majestic Grandes Jorasses. After immersing yourself in this wild landscape, you will gently descend through the Sapin Valley to Courmayeur, where the mountain village atmosphere will captivate you.

In the late afternoon, transfer to Chamonix, where you will enjoy a final farewell dinner, filled with unforgettable memories, before spending your last night in this charming alpine town

Chamonix - Au revoir!

Enjoy your last breakfast before checking out. Take the time to explore Chamonix before heading off.

Access

Access

This trip starts and ends in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. The nearest airport for this trip is Geneva Airport. It takes about 1h15 to drive to the center of Chamonix.

If you are flying into Geneva, the easiest way to get to Chamonix is to use an airport transfer service.
We can book this transfer for you, just ask our specialists. Depending on your preferences, we can arrange a transfer by private or shared taxi. Please let us know your flight schedule so that we can organize your transfer as early as possible and in the most suitable time slot.

We have decided not to include the transfer from Geneva to Chamonix (round trip) to give you the greatest possible flexibility on your arrival and departure times (day and night arrival possible).

Transfers

For your comfort and the quality of your stay, we've decided to shorten some of the less interesting stages and give you better access to the most remarkable sites:

  • Day 2 : lift from Praz-de-Chamonix to La Flégère (round-trip).
  • Day 3 : lift from Chamonix to L'Aiguille du Midi and Plan de l'Aiguille ; the cog-train from Montenvers to Chamonix at the end of the day.
  • Day 4 : lift from Chamonix to the summit of Brévent (one way or round-trip) ; private transfer from Chamonix to Courmayeur
  • Day 5 : local bus transfer from Courmayeur to Arnuva (round-trip - free shuttle in 2024).
  • Day 6 : local bus transfer from Courmayeur to La Visaille (round-trip - free shuttle in 2024) ; optional lift from Chécrouit to Dolonne (at your own expense, only in july and august).
  • Day 7 : local bus transfer from Courmayeur to Arnuva (one way - free shuttle in 2024) ; private transfer from Courmayeur to Chamonix at the end of the day.

NB: upon your arrival at the accommodation, you will be given the Chamonix Valley guest card. This card provides numerous benefits, including free access to the Mont-Blanc Express train for travel between the towns of Servoz and Vallorcine, as well as preferential access to public sports and cultural facilities. A detailed explanatory document will be provided on-site.

We draw your attention to the fact that wearing a seat belt is compulsory at the front and rear in all vehicles you use during the trip, when they are equipped with one, regardless of the regulations in effect in the country visited. By booking an Mont Blanc Experience trip, you agree to respect this obligation. You will be accommodated in 3 or 4-star hotels (depending on the option you've chosen), in Chamonix and Courmayeur, in double or twin rooms, with private bathroom.

These hotels, ideally located in the heart of the cities, offer you the opportunity to fully enjoy the local atmosphere after each hike. Stroll through picturesque streets, go shopping, explore craft shops, or relax with a drink on a terrace. You can also discover the many activities offered by these destinations.

Single room is always "on request".

Note: odd number of people are considered with a triple room. Single room always depends on availability and is with a supplement.

Meals

Our goal is to ensure that you eat well-balanced meals suited for the effort required each day, and to lighten your pack load as much as possible.

Breakfast :
The hotels offer a generous and varied buffet: pastries, fresh bread, homemade jams, fruit and cereals. Savory lovers will also find something to their liking, with a choice of breads, cheeses, ham and eggs.

Dinners :
Dinners in Chamonix and Courmayeur are not included to give you all options in town and a dinner on your own.

If you have strict dietary constraints, we invite you to communicate them to us before departure, in your personal space.

Lunches :
You will find bakeries and grocery stores in Chamonix and Courmayeur. Along some of the hikes, you will also come across mountain inns and mountain huts where it is possible to have a meal.

Drinks :
Beverages (excluding water) are not included. Please pay for all drinks consumed on site before your departure, to avoid any additional charges after your stay.

Luggage transfer

You will have your luggage in Chamonix and Courmayeur.
On hiking days, you will only need to carry your gear for the day, your water, and your picnic.

Trails

Well-marked itinerary, previously recognized by our guides. You are in charge of your route and must know how to read a map and use a compass. You also have precise directions in the "Mon Roadbook" app and in the paper roadbook that will be given to you before departure (maps, descriptive plan, specific information...). The "Mon Roadbook" app allows you to centralize all the necessary information for your trip:
  • The identification of service providers operating during your stay
  • GPS guidance on a map background
  • Photos of crossings
  • The various points of interest on the hike: natural or heritage.

This application, included for this trip, must be downloaded before your departure and works offline (without network).

For each stage, make sure you check the latest information on trail conditions; the manager at your accommodations should also be able to provide you with up-to-date information if you ask.

Itineraries

Our elevation gains are calculated based on altitude differences provided on maps, not by GPS, which, for technical reasons (GPS altitude inaccuracies + statistical dispersion), often give overestimated elevation gains, sometimes by up to 20%.

What you need to know

Be prepared for the weather:
The weather in mountains can change very quickly. the weather forecast is quite accurate for the next 3 upcoming days, but not that much further. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoon when the weather is hot, they are very located and show up very quickly. Wake up earlier in the morning when the weather forecast announces it, you will have crossed the high pass before it starts. Passes and ridge are not safe is the case of thunder. Take advice from your host the day before.

Considering the Environment:
While trekking you have to be careful not to destroy the environment you are enjoying so much. It is not only for your enjoyment, but people and wildlife also rely on this environment.
 
Here are some simple tips:

  • Pick up any litter along the trail.
  • Burn all your toilet paper and bury your faeces, make sure you go at least 50m away from any water source.
  • Drink tap water instead of mineral water as plastic bottles are an unnecessary waste.
  • Stick to the trails to prevent erosion and damage to fragile alpine flora.
  • Ensure all rubbish is packed and bring them back down to the villages.

Insurance :
All tour participants should obtain their own personal insurance which covers medical and emergency evacuation at a minimum. You will of course also want cover for loss or damage to personal effects, flight or trip cancellation etc. Please ask us for advice.

Final tips!

  • To ensure that you have the best time possible, please respect local traditions, customs, values and the environment.
  • Respect privacy when taking photographs.
  • Your attempts at speaking some French or Italian will open hearts and break the ice!
  • Protect the natural environment, see above.

We provide 1 set for every 4 participants, which includes detailed hiking maps of the region, and a roadbook describing your itinerary and trip (a lot of tips and some alternative routes are included).

You will have access to our 24/24 7/7 support hotline to assist you during your trip.
Each participant will have access on his phone to our "Roadbook" app which includes an itinerary descriptions as well GPS guidance.

What you need to bring:
If you don't have the luggage transfer option, pack light, remember that you will have to carry all your stuff during the whole trip. We recommend that your backpack doesn't exceed 10 to 15% of your weight. Take only the essentials.

  • Hiking backpack. A chest strap and waist strap are essential to help to distribute the weight. The size 20 L to 30 L.

  • Warm hat.

Note: All of these items can be purchased there. Please ask us if you'd like some advice about where to go to get any gear.

What to take with you in your day pack:
Please carry the following in your day pack, as a minimum:

  • 2 liters of water.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, lip balm.
  • Warm fleece or thermal layer and gloves.
  • Water proof layer.
  • Lunch
  • Head torch.
  • Hand sanitizer/soap and toilet paper.
  • Your camera.
  • Any money you want for snacks/drinks along the trail.
  • Important - take any personal medications you require during the day - you will not see your kit bag until evening.

First aid kit:
It is recommended that you bring a small personal medical kit including your preferred painkillers, throat lozenges, plasters, strapping tape for blisters, etc. If you are taking regular medication you MUST bring those medicines with you PLUS an extra supply in case one pack is lost. If you have any allergies and/or take any medications, you MUST advise us when booking your trek.

Mont Blanc Experience keeps you informed and is fully transparent when it comes to the potential risks. We gather security risk information from multiple sources: in-house research, monitoring specialized websites, meetings with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "safety and security" trips in the field, constant contact with our regional specialists, local teams on the ground, and France's travel agency federation.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that we cannot make any decisions for you.

If there is a clear and elevated risk, we reserve the right to:

— Reinforce our guide team (for guided trips).
— Modify the itinerary for our tours.
— Place a tour or destination on hiatus for an extended period of time when we consider the level of risk to be too high.
