Day by day

Day 1

Welcome in Zermatt !

Lodging : hotel.
Zermatt is located in the southwest of Switzerland in the canton of Valais. The car-free town is one of the most popular excursion and holiday destinations in Switzerland, especially because of the Matterhorn.
Once arrived, make yourself comfortable and take time to explore this emblematic alpine city at the foot of the Matterhorn.
Day 2

Cultural hiking trail : Zermatt - Zmutt - Furi

Distance : 9 km (5,5 mi) - Ascent : 400 m (1,315 ft). Descent : 400 m (1,315 ft). 4 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
Right after the breakfast, embark on a nice hike from Zermatt to the picturesque hamlet of Zmutt. Enjoy this traditional mountain village filled with wooden chalets and flowery meadows. A true open air museum offering breath-taking views from the Matterhorn to the valley whilst admiring stunning vistas on the surrounding mountains. Return to Zermatt via a pleasant path from Furi to end the day on a peaceful note.
Day 3

Matterhorn Glacier paradise (3883 m/12,740 ft) and the glacier trail

Distance : 7 km (4 mi) - Ascent : 200 m (660 ft). Descent : 550 m (1,805 ft). 2 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
Start the day by enjoying amazing views from the gondola lift up to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the highest ski resort in Europe ! A truly one of a kind experience with its vistas on over 14 glaciers, the ice sculptures exhibition and other surprises. Thereafter, go down with the gondola to Trockener Steg and start of today's hike. There, you will witness the glacier retreat phenomenon's impacts on the surrounding wildlife. There are multiple information panels for those who interested. By the end of the hike, reach Schwarzsee cable car to go back to Zermatt via Furi.
Day 4

Transfer to Bernese Oberland and Panorama Hiking Day

Distance : 16 km (10 mi) - Ascent : 350 m (1,150 ft). Descent : 1150 m (3,775 ft). 5 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
Take the train from Zermatt after the breakfast to reach Bernese Oberland. You will be staying the next 2 nights in the beautiful little hamlet of Wengen. Arrive and check-in at the hotel and set out for a day of exploration. Take the cable car from Wengen to reach the Mannlichen. From here you will start the hike of the day. Continue hiking till
Wengen or cut short the hike by stopping in Kleine Scheidegg or Wengernalp to shorten the hike.
Day 5

Hiking - First - Bachalpsee - Bort and a mountain cart or trotbike experience

Distance : 8 km (5 mi) - Ascent : 325 m (1,060 ft). Descent : 920 m (3,020 ft). 4 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast, dinner. Meals not included : lunch.
After breakfast, take the train to Grindelwald. The Eiger village is nestled in a lovely green valley, surrounded by imposing peaks, such as the Eiger North Wall (3 967 m/13,015 feet) and the Wetterhorn (3 690 m / 12,100 ft). This hike leads over a broad, well-developed path past the flowering alpine meadows to the Bachalpsee. The sharp, jagged peaks of the Wetterhorn, Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn on the opposite side of the valley are impressive. The route leads you to Bort where you can take the gondola down to Grindelwald or choose to descend by trottbike for more fun. Once in Grindelwald, two options to reach you hotel in Wengen: by train via the Kleine Scheidegg pass or with the areal cable train via Männlichen.
Day 6

Eiger trail (Jungfraujoch - top of Europe optional)

Distance : 7 km (4,5 mi) - Ascent : 900 m (2,950 ft). Descent : 250 m (820 ft). 4 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Take the train to Alpiglen via Kleine Scheidegg. The day starts with the famous Eiger trail journeying at the foot of the Eiger north face, one of the most scenic moment this week. Then, once reaching Eigerglestscher station, you have the option to jump into the train to the top of Europe end station of Jungfraujoch at 3 454 meters (11,332 ft).
Note that this ascent is not included in the price and a supplement will be asked on site when presenting your Jungfrau Pass.

After the visit reach Kleine Scheidegg train station and take a ride down to Lauterbrunnen and finally reach Mürren for the next 2 nights.

Day 7

Hiking and exploration around Murren

Distance : 9,5 km (6 mi) - Ascent : 320 m (1,050 ft). Descent : 320 m (1,050 ft). 4 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.

Today you have option between 2 hike: the Northface Trail or Mountain view trail. Both the hikes start from Murren directly. One finishes in Murren through a loop and other brings you to Grutsachalps from where you need to take the scenic train back to murren.
These hikes have a little bit of everything...stunning mountain views, small hamlets and chalets tucked away amidst the mountains, flower-filled alpine meadows, and pastures filled with cows and their musical bells. Along the way, you are treated to spectacular views of Mönch, Eiger, and Jungfrau as well as views over the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Day 8

Transfer to Chamonix

Today you are changing country from Switzerland to France.
Start your day by taking the train till Geneva, then take a shared shuttle transfer to your hotel in Chamonix. Once there, make yourself comfortable in your hotel, stroll through Chamonix's picturesque cobbled streets and soak up the peaceful atmosphere before setting off on an unforgettable hiking adventure.
Day 9

Top of Aiguille du Midi and the Montenvers cog train

Distance : 8,5 km (5.2 mi) - Ascent : 350 m (1,148 ft). Descent : 500 m (1,640 ft). 3.5 h of hiking.
Lodging : hotel. Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
From Chamonix, take the famous cable car to the top of l'Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m / 12,605 ft). Take time to visit the area and enjoy the amazing view on the Mont Blanc summit!
Descent back half way with the lift to the intermediate station of Plan de l'Aiguille (2,350m / 7,710 ft). Here starts the hike of the day. After a short descent to the refuge of the same name, take the famous Grand Balcon Nord route which crosses under all the Aiguilles of Chamonix, from the Aiguille du Plan to the Aiguille de la République. The itinerary passes at the foot of the Blaitière and Nantillons glaciers. A short climb leads us to the Signal Forbes (2,200 m / 7,218 ft) offering a panoramic view of the Mer de Glace and the North face of the Grandes Jorasses in particular. A stop on the Montenvers site, before going back down with the famous red cog-train to Chamonix.
Day 10

Lake Blanc and Chéserys lakes

Distance : 9,5 km (6.1 mi) - Ascent : 500 m (1,640 ft). Descent : 500 m (1,640 ft). 4 h of hiking.

This day in the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges massif, facing Mont-Blanc, will offer you breathtaking panoramas of glaciers and legendary peaks towering over 4,000 meters!
Take the cable car to La Flégère, then begin the famous balcony path that leads to the stunning Lac Blanc (2,352 m / 7,716 ft), a true mirror reflecting the surrounding mountains. Continue on to the Chéserys lakes, crystal-clear gems where the highest peaks of the Mont-Blanc massif are perfectly mirrored, offering an unforgettable spectacle.

Then, descend on foot back to La Flégère and take the cable car back to Chamonix.

Day 11

Goodbye to the majestic Alps

Included meals : breakfast. Meals not included : lunch, dinner.
Enjoy your last breakfast in the Alps before checking out. Take the time to explore Chamonix before heading off.
The active times are given as an indication and may vary depending on several elements (eg. weather conditions, terrain, etc.). Transfer times may also vary depending on road and traffic conditions. If necessary (eg: weather conditions, decision of local authorities, etc.), we may also be required to adapt the program for the smooth running of your trip and in the interest of the participants.

Currencies

Switzerland
Switerzland doesn't belong to Euro zone. The Swiss use their own currency, the Swiss Franc. The exchange rate is approximately 1 CHF = 1 EUR and 1 CHF = 1,26$
Swiss shops and hotels may take euros (usually in bills only, and change in CHF), and usually offer an unfavorable exchange rate (for you). You are better off paying by credit/debit card or withdrawing cash from an ATM.
France
France is part of the Euro zone. You may find ATMs easily in the main cities and towns.
Better to have cash in the most remote areas to purchase extras (ex.: for drinks). Huts do not always accept credit cards.

Access

This trip starts in Zermatt and ends in Chamonix. The nearest airport for arrival is Bern or Zurich and for departure it is Geneva. All 3 airports are in Switzerland.

Note: It is possible to book train and/or shared or private taxi transfers according to your arrival and departure airport. Just ask your specialist !

Transfers to reach Zermatt and get back to the airport from Chamonix after the trip are not included in your trip price. It is possible to add these at an extra cost. Just ask your specialist !  

Lodging

You will be staying in comfortable 3-star hotels, in double or twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms. 

On request we can upgrade you in a room with a special view, or balcony, or in 4 or 5-star upgraded hotels. 

Note: Most of the hotels take advantage of the view or balcony to create different room categories. Our price is based on a standard room.

Single room is always "on request".

Note: odd number of people are considered sharing a triple room. Single room always depends on availability and is with a supplement.

If you wish to arrive earlier or extend your stay, it's essential to book your accommodation in advance. We can arrange one or more extra nights at one of our partner hotels. Just ask !

Meals

Our goal is to ensure that you eat well-balanced meals suited for the effort required each day, and to lighten your pack load as much as possible.

Breakfast :
The hotels offer a generous and varied buffet: pastries, fresh bread, homemade jams, fruit and cereals. Savoury lovers will also find something to their liking, with a choice of breads, cheeses, ham and eggs.

Dinners :
In the hotels, dinner typically consists of a fixed three-course menu, including a starter, main course, and dessert.

Note: Dinners in are not included to give you all options in town and a dinner on your own.

Lunches :
You can buy local products in supermarkets or bakeries in the valley. During your hikes, you can find some huts and restaurants along the way that offer good hot meals.

Drinks :
Beverages (excluding water) are not included. Please pay for all drinks consumed on site before your departure, to avoid any additional charges after your stay

If you have strict dietary constraints, we invite you to communicate them to us before departure.

Luggage transfer

You will require luggage transfer on day 6 where you change accommodation from Wengen to Murren. 

You will drop off your luggage at the train station along with the voucher provided to you before setting out for the hike. At the end of the day, you will pick up your luggage at the destination train station and carry it to your accommodation.

Trails

Well-marked itinerary, previously recognized by our guides. You are in charge of your route and must know how to read a map and use a compass. You also have precise directions in the "Mon Roadbook" app and in the paper roadbook that will be given to you before departure (maps, descriptive plan, specific information...). The "Mon Roadbook" app allows you to centralize all the necessary information for your trip:

Itineraries

Our elevation gains are calculated based on altitude differences provided on maps, not by GPS, which, for technical reasons (GPS altitude inaccuracies + statistical dispersion), often give overestimated elevation gains, sometimes by up to 20%.

What you need to know

Be prepared for the weather:
The weather in mountains can change very quickly. the weather forecast is quite accurate for the next 3 upcoming days, but not that much further. Thunderstorms are common in the afternoon when the weather is hot, they are very located and show up very quickly. Wake up earlier in the morning when the weather forecast announces it, you will have crossed the high pass before it starts. Passes and ridge are not safe is the case of thunder. Take advice from your host the day before.

Considering the Environment:
While trekking you have to be careful not to destroy the environment you are enjoying so much. It is not only for your enjoyment, but people and wildlife also rely on this environment.
 
Here are some simple tips:

  • Pick up any litter along the trail,
  • Burn all your toilet paper and bury your faeces, make sure you go at least 50m away from any water source,
  • Drink tap water instead of mineral water as plastic bottles are an unnecessary waste,
  • Stick to the trails to prevent erosion and damage to fragile alpine flora,
  • Ensure all rubbish is packed and bring them back down to the villages.

Insurance :
All tour participants should obtain their own personal insurance which covers medical and emergency evacuation at a minimum. You will of course also want cover for loss or damage to personal effects, flight or trip cancellation etc. Please ask us for advice.

Final tips!

  • To ensure that you have the best time possible, please respect local traditions, customs, values and the environment.
  • Respect privacy when taking photographs.
  • Your attempts at speaking some French or Italian will open hearts and break the ice!
  • Protect the natural environment, see above.

American, Canadian, Australian and British Travellers

Visa Requirements

  • No visa is required for American, Canadian, British or Australian citizens for stays of up to 90 days within the Schengen Area.

Passport Requirements
Travellers must hold a passport that:

  • remains valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen Area.

It is strongly recommended to ensure a minimum of 6 months' validity prior to expiration to avoid potential boarding refusals by airlines.

Asian Travellers - Visa-Exempt Countries

The following nationalities may enter the Schengen Area for tourist stays of up to 90 days without a visa :
Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong (HKSAR passport).

Routine Vaccinations:
Travellers should ensure that their routine vaccinations are up to date, according to national guidelines :

  • COVID-19

These vaccinations are generally recommended for all adults.

Altitude and Physical Effort
Our tours involves sustained daily effort and includes sections at moderate altitude. Travellers are advised to :

  • ensure they are in adequate physical condition,
  • consult a healthcare professional in case of medical conditions potentially affected by altitude or exertion,
  • bring all personal medication required for the entire duration of the trip.

Dentist and general physician:
We recommend a checkup with both before leaving on your trip.  

Food and Water Safety
In these area, tap water is safe to drink and hygiene standards are high.
Nonetheless:

  • wash hands regularly,
  • use a clean reusable water bottle,
  • avoid drinking untreated natural water sources without proper filtration or purification.

Getting ready

Physical fitness level 2

To take full advantage of your trip, make sure that you stay in good shape by walking or hiking at least twice per week (12km to 15km).

Physical fitness level 3

To take full advantage of your trip, make sure that you stay in good shape by walking or hiking least once per week (around 15km) on a trail with considerable vertical gain (250m/hr) or by participating in a moderately intense athletic activity for 1 to 1.5hrs.

Your first aid kit

It is recommended that you bring a small personal medical kit including your preferred painkillers, throat lozenges, plasters, strapping tape for blisters, etc. If you are taking regular medication you MUST bring those medicines with you PLUS an extra supply in case one pack is lost. If you have any allergies and/or take any medications, you MUST advise us when booking your trek! 

For the medication and pain relievers listed below, we recommend that you check with your doctor beforehand, adding what you need based on personal requirements and the specificity of your trip.

  • An analgesic.
  • An anti-inflammatory (pills or gels).
  • An anti-diarrheal tablets,
  • A disinfectant, band aids (several sizes), mole skin, sterile compresses, medical tape, Steri-Strips, non-stick bandages, and an elastic bandage.
  • An antiseptic.
  • Sunscreen and a burn cream.
  • Eye drops.
  • Other : survival blanket, scissors, 2 or 3 safety pins, a tick remover, a pair of latex gloves, earplugs.
  • Any personal medication.

We provide 1 set for every 4 participants, which includes detailed hiking maps of the region, and a roadbook describing your itinerary and trip (a lot of tips and some alternative routes are included).
You will have access to our 24/24 7/7 support hotline to assist you during your trip.
Each participant will have access on his phone to our "Roadbook" app which includes an itinerary descriptions as well GPS guidance.
 
What you need to bring:

Essentials:

  • Hiking backpack. A chest strap and waist strap are essential to help to distribute the weight.
  • Comfortable and worn in trekking boots.
  • Warm hat.
  • Cap.
  • Sun glasses.
  • Good quality Merino Wool walking socks.
  • Base layer tops - Merino Wool is the best choice.
  • Warm mid-layer tops.
  • A water and windproof layer (jacket and pants) eg. Gore-Tex.
  • 1x Walking trousers.
  • Light gloves.
  • Shorts.
  • Buff or Snood.
  • A natural or synthetic down jacket.
  • Casual clothes & footwear for evenings. One set is enough as you will not wear them for a long time.
  • Nightwear and underwear.
  • Sleeping bag liner - either silk, cotton or fleece (only if you're staying in dormitories in mountain Huts).
  • Sandals or flip flops.

  • Ziplock bags are handy for convenient leak-proof storage.

  • Phone, Camera, batteries and charger.
  • Airtight and waterproof ‘dry bags' are great for keeping your clothes dry and storing your dirty laundry separate from clean clothes!
  • Head torch and batteries (spare batteries too).
  • Walking poles are highly recommended on Alps paths.
  • Cash & Cards (Euros and Swiss Francs).
  • Pocket knives or cutlery can be useful for picnics.
  • WATER - please be able to carry 2 liters of water.
  • Your sense of humor and adventure!

Useful extras:

  • Binoculars.
  • Book to read or Kindle.
  • Notebook and pen.
  • Ear plugs.

What to take with you in your day pack:
Please carry the following in your day pack, as a minimum:

  • 2 liters of water.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat, lip balm.
  • Warm fleece or thermal layer and gloves.
  • Water proof layer.
  • Lunch
  • Head torch.
  • Hand sanitizer/soap and toilet paper.
  • Your camera.
  • Any money you want for snacks/drinks along the trail.
Important - take any personal medications you require during the day - you will not see your kit bag until evening.

The rest you can put into your main bag which will be carried to the next accommodation, only if you've subscribed to this option.

What about gear I want to leave before the trek?
Before departure for your trek you might pack your ‘town clothes' or anything you don't want on trek with you and ask your hotel (if you come back to the same hotel). If you want to do this, then consider bringing or buying a simple bag here for this purpose. We can also help you organize the storage of a larger suitcase, Please ask us for advice.

First aid kit:
It is recommended that you bring a small personal medical kit including your preferred painkillers, throat lozenges, plasters, strapping tape for blisters, etc. If you are taking regular medication you MUST bring those medicines with you PLUS an extra supply in case one pack is lost. If you have any allergies and/or take any medications, you MUST advise us when booking your trek!

Mont Blanc Experience keeps you informed and is fully transparent when it comes to the potential risks. We gather security risk information from multiple sources: in-house research, monitoring specialized websites, meetings with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "safety and security" trips in the field, constant contact with our regional specialists, local teams on the ground, and France's travel agency federation.

Nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that we cannot make any decisions for you.

If there is a clear and elevated risk, we reserve the right to:

— Reinforce our guide team (for guided trips).
— Modify the itinerary for our tours.
— Place a tour or destination on hiatus for an extended period of time when we consider the level of risk to be too high.
