A Historical Journey: The First Winter Traverse

The history of the Chamonix-Zermatt route dates back to January 16, 1903, when Dr. Michel Payot, Alfred Simond, Joseph Couttet, and Joseph Ravanel accomplished the first winter traverse of this formidable path. Armed with rudimentary equipment, the team embarked from Chamonix, crossed the Orny and Orcières glaciers, and took a pause at Évolène before reaching Zermatt via the Col d'Hérens on January 22. This marked the first ski connection between the two alpine towns, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most famous routes in the mountaineering world.
